Raul Seixas - Idi a mim
prolly my favorite version of one of my favorite songs.
lyrics in english:
St. George called the Calvary to attention/ And I am happy because I am in your company/ I am dressed in the clothes and weapons of St. George/ For my enemies may have feet/ but they cannot catch me/ for my enemies may have hands/ but they cannot touch me/ for my enemies may have eyes/ but they cannot see me/ and not a single thought they may have will harm me/ guns will not reach my body/ knives and swords will break before they touch me/ cords and ropes will burst without binding me/ for I am dressed in the clothes and weapons of St. George/ St. George is from Capadocia/ God save George! God save George!
This song was originally written by Jorge Ben and covered by almost everyone (which seems to be the trend with Jorge Ben, his song “Mas, Que Nada!” was made famous by Sergio Mendes and later the Black Eyed Peas with their godawful rendition, and he ended up suing Rod Stewart for ripping off the melody of “Taj Mahal” in “If You Think I’m Sexy” literally note for note).
Saint George is an important figure in Brazilian street culture, as he is the patron saint of warriors, so gangsters in the 1950’s and 1960’s started adopting him as a sort of guardian, along with their patron pombagiras and orishas (from the Afro-Brazilian Umbanda religion) for safety and revenge. Racionais MCs formed in Sao Paulo during the 80’s in the periferias (periphery slums) and are decidedly gangster. Jorge da Capadocia is the first track off their amazing album Sobrevivendo no Inferno (Surviving in Hell), and is meant as sort of a prayer for safety.
Fucking rad.
